is, according to harry reid, there was a huddle but jake tapper was told that the lawmakers were told to, quote, talk solutions. that certainly would be a change. >> the president, republican and democratic leaders coming together to unveil civil rights icon rosa parks, all pulling in the same direction. the partisan tug-of-war over. >> mr. president, you honor us with your presence. thank you for being here. >> reporter: but this bipartisan moment was just that. a moment. here's the senate leaders going at it just 45 minutes earlier. >> he wasn't elected to work with the congress he want. he was elected to work with a congress he had. >> republicans are too busy fighting among themselves to unite behind a course so they are instead doing nothing. zero. >> reporter: the president did ask congressional leaders to the white house to discuss forced spending cuts for their first face-to-face meeting that republicans call devastating. but the invitation is for friday, the same day those cuts kick in. democrats came to the president's defense. why wait so long? >> well, look, it is entirely

's be honest about why harry reid did that. they were going in recess. if reid held the vote on friday and they got cloture, they would not have had a final vote on him until saturday or sunday. he was accommodating the republicans and the democrats' senate schedule. >> oh, no. >> let's be very clear. >> what's so wrong with voting after the recess? what's so wrong with -- >> why not vote now? is he qualified now? if he is, he's qualified today, thursday and tomorrow. he's qualified. if he's not qualified, vote against him. >> let's take a listen right now with both of you to john mccain on thursday. kristen, i'll get you to respond right after. >> to be honest with you, it goes back to there's a lot of illwill towards senator hagel because when he was a republican he attacked president bush mercilessly, at one point said he was the worst president since herbert hoover, said that the surge was the worst mrunter since the vietnam war, which is nonsense. and was very anti his own party and own people. people don't forget that. you can disagree but if you're disagreeable, people don't for

. ashley: in separate interviews sunday, both president obama and harry reid called for more revenue, only meaning one thing, higher taxes. this, of course, comes on the heels of an unexpected economic contraction in the fourth quarter and a rise in the unemployment rate. joining me now, fox news' senior judicial analyst. >> smiling because i'm happy to be here, but hard to smile with more taxes. didn't we just give him all the taxes he asked for a month or so ago? this is a mentality that believes in redistricting wealth. we're seeing the president at his most progressive capital "p" as jfk and woodrow wilson after the inaugural address. seems to me and those who watch this for a living that he's determined to imprint a big government brand of government into the fabric of federal law, even more than he attempted to do in the first administration. tracy: to call taxes slavery, that leads people to believe they don't have to pay them. >> if you believe the only legitimate commercial transaction is a voluntary one, then you can argue that taxes are theft and slavery because it's -- i'm not

committee, appears to have the support of the most powerful democrat in congress, majority leader harry reid. >> so i have the utmost confidence in him as. as to the rest of the investigation, they'll have to be handled the way they're all handled around here, in depth. the ethics committee are taking a look at it. >> there's some relatively serious allegations here. are you confident he did nothing wrong? >> i have confidence he did not, did nothing wrong but that's what's investigations are all about. >> reporter: the rnc released an e-mail that says senator menendez is becoming, quote, a headache for democrats. in the e-mail, identifying owe mendez as d-obama problem. >> so he's obviously willing to fight back. >> i think it shows his office is now turning a corner. last week he was sort of dodging reporters. he he was going down stairwells that even reporters who cover that beat often don't know about. this suggests with his office e-mailing out this video from univision that they're ready to fight back on these allegations. >> i know you'll stay on top of the story. >>> president obama

the sound bite from majority leader harry reid but he said he grew up in a town filled with brothels. you know he's from nevada near las vegas area and so he's used to quote salty language and so this didn't offend him but he said, wolf, that the speaker should know who is sitting on their posterior. if this is the language they are using before the cuts go into effect this may be a more exciting story. >> how effective has the president been in delivering this hard hitting message basically totally blaming the republicans for refusing to compromise? >> well, the goal here is to make this really feel, make americans realize how much this will hit home and how much the budget cuts will impact their own pocketbook. the latest polling shows that's had mixed results. right now 60, 6-0 percent of americans believe these forced spending cuts will hurt the overall economy. only 30% think it will have a major impact on their own personal finances. and politicians, insiders, both democrats and republicans tell me they think more americans have to really feel it in the pocketbook before democrats a
